Karl Barth

Karl Barth, the Swiss Reformed theologian, is sometimes labelled the most important theologian since Thomas Aquinas. He turned away from the twentieth century’s dominant liberal theology in favour of a ‘theology of the Word’ and an emphasis on the Trinity and God’s revelation. He was a major influence on the study of ethics, and was an opponent of the Nazis, especially in his drafting of the Barmen Declaration, an explicit rejection of the Third Reich.
